How To Determine How Much Bandwidth Your Client Needs For Their Business Network Architecture

When determining the amount of bandwidth a client needs, you first have to understand why the client needs internet/WAN connectivity. Initially you want work with the client to develop an idea of what the client wants to get from the internal network, in other words develop a list of business drivers.

Does the company require*:

?Use of VOIP
?Are they using Voip now
?Will the use it in the future
?How many trunks do they currently support and how much bandwidth is currently being used at the core by those trunks
?Use of IP Telephony (voice to the desktop)
?If they are using IP telephony, are they using only SIP or are they using other protocols and other applications of the feature set on the phones and what are the manufacturers recommended guidelines on bandwidth consumption
?If they are not using IP telephony, do they know what protocols and applications of the feature set on the phones they will use, and what are the manufacturers recommended guidelines on bandwidth consumption
?What internal applications do they use currently
?What are the bandwidth requirements of those applications currently
?What are the manufacturer or developer's guidelines on how much bandwidth to use
?Does the client plan to add additional applications they know are heavy on bandwidth usage?
?Does the client use any security scanning that may take up resources?
?When do the scans occur and are those during peak time
?Do they plan to add security scanning, and if so where (the core or edge or across aggregation points)?
?Does the client currently use QOS, and if so have they manually queued traffic or are they using difserv?

*These are a good sample of questions, but in short, you are conducting a workshop to identify the business and technical drivers of the organization

You will also want to examine the current network design, identify current bandwidth usage across the network, identify bottlenecks, and where T circuits are being employed, where they are using MPLS or metro-e circuits, where they are using dark fiber, if any.

Ultimately you want to understand where their current problems lay from layer 1 and 2 perspectives based on the current design and then you will need to break the network down logically at layer 3 and 4 examining what protocols are being used and how they are being broadcasted across broadcast domains which can create sluggish communications. Is the client using VOIP and not using QOS, is the client using a lot of DHCP relay, are there multicasts being broadcast that are creating superfluous traffic, etc...

Once you have a clear picture of the current network configuration and you have base lined the network, and have identified their current issues via a gap analysis then you can move on to identifying "how much bandwidth they need" internally.

From an external perspective you need to simply perform a firewall analysis of inbound and outbound traffic and match that against the CIR of your ISP pipe(s). You may also want to extrapolate any new data gleaned from your research into the forecasted use of applications for additional bandwidth usage in the future.

So to summarize you will need to use the following methodology:

1. Identify the business requirements and drivers
2. Understand the technical requirements
3. Identify how data is being transported currently
4. Conduct an OSI based network analysis
5. Develop a Gap analysis with suggested solutions
6. Develop a high level plan and provide the customer with an estimated band width requirement based on evidentiary matter obtained in steps 1 - 5.

What Is A Tier 1 Bandwidth Backbone Provider?

One could say that the phrases "Tier I" and "backbone provider" are a bit redundant; others might say that they comfortably go together (like "ice cold Coke"). the functional contrast should be between a Tier I provider (e.g. AT&T, MCI, Sprint, Savvis/C&W, Global Crossing, Qwest, Level 3) and companies that are not Tier I providers -- who themselves have to buy bandwidth from Tier I providers.

Best example would be a local Internet provider offering T1 or DS3 service in a regional area: they might have their own facilities interconnecting different serving offices in a region, but they would have to send the traffic to a Tier I provider if the traffic goes outside their region. The Tier II provider makes money by buying a fixed amount of bandwidth, and selling it to many subscribers. The company must decide on what level of contention their customers must be exposed to. If you take a look at the W(wireless) ISP forum in BBR Reports you will see several threads from time to time discussing something like "how many customers will fit on a T1." Different providers will have different philosophies about how much to oversubscribe their network. What is true in the WISP world is also true in the cable internet world, and is also in the Tier II world. Think of it this way: if a local Tier II provider like "X-Com" (made up name) sells a T1 service to a new customer, will they add incrementally to their wholesale bandwidth purchase? No. But if Sprint sells a T1, their customer will get a dedicated port onto Sprint's backbone network at full speed with no contention.

Generally, there will be a price advantage of using a Tier II provider compared to a Tier I provider, as Tier II providers undercut the Tier I pricing and can afford to do so as they are oversubscribing their network facilities.

Tier II providers can be excellent source of inexpensive bandwidth if your network needs can absorb occasional delays or added latency (I'm not talking outages) -- if it's not mission critical or real time stuff, or if you're not yourself reselling the bandwidth.

Others might have other thoughts....

Bottom line is don't shop just on price. There's more to making a good business decision than dollars and cents. You need to make sure you get exactly what you need no matter what the cost.

Nokia And Sony Ericsson Go To War! - Who Will Win In 2008?

Join me as I take a look at the battle that's brewing between the heavyweight in the mobile world: Nokia and Sony Ericsson, both of whom want you to buy THEIR mobile phones!

Nokia - Going Tubin'

A lot of hopes are pinned on a brand new Nokia phone that's due out soon, the Tube. It's significant, because it's going to be Nokia first EVER full touchscreen mobile phone. Yep, they plan to take on the iPhone with it! To that end, they've been in development on a brand new version of their Symbian-based operating system, called S60 Touch. It is said to boast full touch control, massive 3+ inch screen, a VERY high spec camera, and all the usual Nokia user-friendliness.

However, recent shots of it, and test users' opinions have said it's not THAT nice to use. And whilst it may aim at the same touch control mechanism as the iPhone, it seems somehow clunkier, according to reports; the Nokia Tube's just not as smooth, or as fluid as its rival from Apple.

Sony Ericsson - power users of the world rejoice

So, if the Tube is going to be a bit of a let-down, what have Sony Ericsson got up their sleeves? Well, it seems they have a quadruple-header of REALLY high-end mobile phones coming up. First up is a Cyber-Shot camera phone known only by its codename of 'Shiho'. It's not been confirmed exactly what spec it will have, but if the rumours are to be believed, it will have AT LEAST a 7.2 megapixel camera, with 3x optical zoom. Combine that with the Cyber-Shot gubbins, and it will make for one awesome camera phone. If Sony Ericsson are going to rule the camera world with the Shiho, then they aim to rule the music world with their new really, really high end Walkman phone, so secret that we don't even know its new codename. All we know is that it was called 'Maria', and was based on a totally new version of Symbian UIQ, making it a proper iPhone-Killer. We don't know exactly how powerful it will be, but one thing's for sure; it will be powerful!

They pale in comparison, though, to Sony Ericsson's BIG pair of heavy-hitters. In the Windows Mobile world, and aiming to crack America, we have the stunning X1, an all-metal, super-powered mega-smart-phone. And then, alongside that, will be the mobile phone that the world and its dog is waiting for: the Sony Ericsson Paris, rumoured to be the upcoming P5. Whilst we don't know the full specs of this monster yet, we DO know it's UIQ-powered, with an incredibly-fast processor, 5 megapixel camera, sliding QWERTY keypad, built-in GPS, and an exclusive, metal body. Certainly cool enough to kick the Nokia Tube into a cocked hat. Not that it won't have competition, though, because rumored to be out this year is another newbie to the world of mobile phones: the new 3G iPhone.

Broadband - Connecting Taiwan

The use of broadband technology has seen rapid growth in recent years, and for some it's proved to be vital to not just business, but on a much more personal level - allowing wider communication networks to be established and bring people closer.

But what about in areas where it may be impossible to integrate broadband? Difficulties in environment, such as mountainous regions, are one example of an environment which can cause problems when trying to lay the technology needed for such connections to be set up.

But as governments look to fund broadband projects in rural and isolated areas, the inhabitants of such areas now have the opportunity to establish connections in order to access a wide variety of resources - which could, in time, prove beneficial in areas such as trade and education - which would otherwise have proved difficult due to the isolation as a result of the area.

One such scheme has helped bring aboriginal communities in Taiwan closer to the outside world. Through government-backed project called the 'universal service obligation', the village of Shan-Mei - located in the country's mountainous central region - is home to over 700 people from the Tsou tribe.

The project was funded through contributions from the country's phone companies, whilst the fibre-optic technology required was funded by a subsidiary of Taiwan Mobile - one of the country's leading communication companies - which also provided the village with computers as well as training.

The introduction of broadband technology into the community has brought new opportunities, with local farmers now able to market and sell their produce online, whilst local businesses - such as hotels and restaurants - now have the opportunity to promote their services to a wider audience and help aid tourism to their region.

One area in particular in which cheap broadband technology has aided the villagers is education, allowing for long-distance education to ensure children in isolated areas don't miss out on traditional education, which would otherwise have been difficult to access due to location.

The people of Shan-Mei appear to have embraced the new technology with enthusiasm, with the newly-opened internet caf regularly packed, allowing for new opportunities for entrepreneurship, networking and socialisation - with the local primary school children utilising the new technology to create personal web pages packed with interests, pictures and favourites to reach out and communicate virtually with others.

A great tool to involve the whole family is to create a travel journal for the children. They can use a notebook and record the same items that you did, writing what their experiences were. They can also write a story telling what they experienced each day. You can create a game for them where they count the cows they see, other children they met, or towns, etc., keeping that information in their journal.

Troubleshooting Computer Freeze (Lockup) Problems

How familiar does the following sound? Your computer was working fine, but then suddenly started locking up (aka hanging or freezing), rebooting itself (crashing) or shutting down spontaneously? If you know only too well what I am talking about, then read on! Performing the simple steps below can fix the majority of lockup cases.

1. Check for recently installed software or hardware.
If the lockups started to happen after you installed a new peace of hardware, new software program, or new drivers, uninstall it and see if the problem goes away.

2. Run your antivirus program.
One of the first things to do in the case of sudden lockups is to run your antivirus program. Check your antivirus manufacturer's website for updates and latest virus definition files. (This is absolutely necessary, outdated antivirus is not going to be of any use!) If you don't have antivirus software installed - or if updates are unavailable - run one of the web-based antivirus scans that some major antivirus vendors like Trend Micro are offering for free. You can find a comprehensive list of available web-based scans and free antivirus programs on http://www.free-antivirus.info.

3. Run some good spyware removal tool.
If your machine is not infected with any viruses, it is still possible that it has some harmful adware or spyware is present. Download and run some good spyware removal tool such as AdAware or Microsoft AntiSpyware. Check http://www.free-antivirus.info for a list of free spyware removal applications.

4. Check for free hard drive space.
When no viruses are found, check out free hard drive space on drive C:. Make sure there is more than 20% of free space available; low disk space can lead to random lockups.

5. Check for overheating.
Overheating is another known cause of lockups. It can be caused by problems with fans inside the case, dust buildup, or other cooling problems. Make sure the power supply fan and CPU fan are running and free of dust buildup. You can check the temperatures inside the case by running Motherboard monitor http://mbm.livewiredev.com - make sure the temperatures are within the preset limits. Be very careful while cleaning inside the computer case (use plastic vacuum crevice tool) and NEVER OPEN THE POWER SUPPLY CASE as it contains high voltage.

6. Check the hard disk.
Check the hard disk - it is possible that its logical structure is corrupted. To check the disk for errors, right-click on the disk C: icon in "My Computer", select the "Tools" tab, check all check boxes in the "Check disk options" field, and press the "Check now" button. It should ask whether you want to schedule the check next time you restart your computer - answer "Yes" and restart your PC. The check will be performed automatically after startup; it can take a while, so be patient. The program will attempt to fix some problems automatically ?however, if the hard disk is failing physically, it will need to be replaced. It is also a good idea to run Disk Defragmenter (located in Start Menu > Programs > Accessories > System Tools) to optimize data placement on the hard disk for increased performance and reliability.

7. Check the memory.
Sometimes random lockups can be attributed to the computer memory (RAM) starting to fail. You can test the memory by running Windows Memory Diagnostic that can be downloaded from http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp. If memory problems are found, try re-seating the RAM (pull it out and plug it back in). If it doesn't work, replace the defective RAM.

8. Check for other hardware problems (advanced users).
More hardware-related problems can be diagnosed by running hardware tests from the Ultimate Boot CD that can be downloaded from http://www.ultimatebootcd.com. However, you should only use it if you know what are you doing - some programs on that CD can be dangerous when used inappropriately (for example, some of them can wipe the contents of your hard disk).

9. Update Windows and drivers.
Some lockups can be caused by outdated software components - update your windows and drives by running a windows update: http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com (it's good idea to run it regularly).

The above steps will help diagnose and eliminate the most common causes of lockups. Hundreds more of other possible scenarios need to be dealt with on a case-by-case basis, as it all goes down to your particular computer configuration. Asking on PC troubleshooting forums/newsgroups should help you figure out solutions to not-so-obvious lockup cases.

Carnival Elation Cruise Review

The Elation is a ship built in 1998 for Carnival Cruise Lines. It was the first ship to have the azipod propulsion system. Everything you read about the Elation will include a small blurb about the azipod system. You may wonder what the heck that is so Ill tell you. Its much like having font wheel drive on your car. Instead of the energy source pushing the ship it pulls it instead. This makes maneuvering the ship much easier so you can be confident there wont be any listing or tipping over of the ship on your cruise. Also it reduces those vibrations that cause motion sickness in people like myself.

Enough about mechanics though because Carnivals got the fun dont they? Yes sir, they do. The Carnival Elation has three swimming pools. One with a 214 ft water slide! This is where the music is and the pool games. Expect it to be busy the first few days. My favorite pool is the one at the back of the ship on verandah deck because it takes new passengers about 3 days to find it so for the first couple days of your cruise it is uncrowded. The last pool is the kiddie pool on promenade deck at the ships aft (back). This pool is a bit like swimming in a toilet with all the babies in their swim diapers-which are not allowed.

If gambling is your thing then head down to the Casablanca casino. There are more than 200 slot machines to choose from including several mega cash machines that are linked with other Carnival ships fleetwide. The biggest jackpot that I have seen was over a million dollars won on the now defunct Carnival Jubilee. I stick to the slots, I figure its the quickest way to lose my alloted gambling cash then I can get on with the rest of the cruise. If you are a more sophisticated gambler than I there is also roulette, black jack and Caribbean stud poker to play.

Free drinks on a cruise-impossible you say? Not so. You can attend wine tastings or as we do go to check out the art an hour before the famed art auction where they pass out free wine and cheese. If you have been on more than one cruise with the same line you can attend the past guest party. Dont dismiss this as a waste of time if you like to drink-the drinks are free and plentiful and all you have to do is watch a short spiel where the cruiseline pats themselves on the back for giving you a great vacation. There is usually one evening where the liquor is free for tasting in the shopping area.

If you are into healthier pursuits then you can head up to the jogging track on the Elations Sun deck or to the gym on the Sports deck. The Carnival Elation has a half court basketball court for your enjoyment and they do supply the basketball to play with. Elation has a full service spa onboard. I confess I have never got around to the spa but I know they do offer foot massages for about $20 and everything up to a couples massage for $220. It sounds steep but just imagine how relaxing it would be to have a message and after you dont have to massage someone else!

For the kids there is Camp Carnival. Our son has gone to Camp Carnival on many many cruises and loves it everytime. The children are divided by age groups and have activities planned for those ages. I recommend that your child goes to the first night where you can sign them up for the camp. There are introduced to each other and socialize a little. It doesnt mean they ever have to go again and there is no extra charge although we usually tip the staff because they can make of break your kids cruise experience. Our son went to an activity called swimming under the stars where the pool was off limits at night except to kids in the program and so they had the pool and slide to themselves. You just drop your kid off for whatever activities they would enjoy. For small children you will be supplied with a pager so the staff can contact you in case your child wants to leave. Their activities take place inside Childrens World which is an area of 2500 sq ft filled with computers and toys and games. Activities for older children take place in different areas on the ship-for example pizza making takes place in Tiffanys. On the last night there will be a farewell party for the kids. Get there on time or you may not get in. All the children receive a parting gift at this party ie a backpack or CD case.

As for my favorite part, the art of gastronomy there are a myriad of choices. The two formal dining rooms on Carnival Elation are the Inspiration and the Imagination named after sister ships in the fleet. You will be assigned one of these with a specific dining time. I always check the menu early in the day so I can decide if I want to show up at my appointed time or eat elsewhere at my leisure. The other places to eat aboard the Elation are Tiffanys which is the buffet restaurant that changes the menu everyday and is different for lunch than dinner or the snack bar on Lido deck where fries and burgers are available for lunch. Tiffanys lunch menus are called taste of nations where one day may be Mexican food with salsa and chips and another may be American BBQ where fried chicken and potato salad are offered. There was also Indian and Italian that I can recall. At the far back on the right hand side of Tiffanys you will find Carnivals famous pizza being made fresh all the time. You can order a whole pizza and choose you toppings of get a slice fresh from the oven. At the same location deli sandwiches are made. This is a wonderful spot to eat early on in the voyage as your fellow passengers wont know about this yet therefore there will be no lining up for you.

Sushi is served on promenade deck every evening. There was no raw fish (Sashimi) the week we sailed but many varieties of fresh made before your eyes sushi to select from. Of course Wasabi and pickled ginger and soy sauce were all available as well. There is also never a sushi line I presume because no one seems to realize that this also is included in your cruise fare. Needless to say we went there every single evening. Tortillas chips and salsa were served on Promenade deck on Mexican day in the evening while a mariachi band played for us.

Room service, room service how do I love thee, let me count the ways. Room service is free but a tip is in order. Pretzels or chips can come with any sandwich- a tasty midnight snack. Room service was always speedy and correct. You can also order cookies, "crudites", fruit and salad. At your service 24 hours a day.

If you need to keep in touch the Internet cafe offers internet usage at 75 cents a minute and different packages up to 250 minutes for 40 cents a minute. You can bring your own laptop and use it in the cafe but not in your cabin on the Elation. You pay for usage whether you use theirs or your though. Not sure if that makes it worth lugging it around.

Speaking of cabins, we had an ocean view cabin category 6C. We had three people on the cabin and we fit comfortably. This ship has only 26 demi suites (category11) and 28 suites (category12). It really doesnt matter to me which deck as there are elevators to take you up and down.

Virtual World video game arcade is right beside the Mikado lounge-a perfect spot to let your teen hang out while you catch one of the Las Vegas style shows in the lounge. There are the usual driving games and shooting games. The video games take tokens that are bought right inside the arcade. You can use your sign and sail card to buy tokens. At some point during your cruise there will be a video game tournament for the kids in this case the games are free. It is part of the Camp Carnival program.

The Mikado lounge is where all the shows take palce. There was a comedy show, a magician, a hypnotist, dancing show girls-rated G. There are musical shows too. The week I sailed there was a special guest announced at he end of one musical show. After much preamble Mr Stevie Wonder was brought onto the stage. People went running from the lounge theater to get their friends and family to see Stevie Wonder. There was screaming that I thought only the Beatles could elicit. Being a pale face from Canada Im not too clear on the likeness of Mr Wonder but I was pondering which cabin would Stevie Wonder stay in On the Carnival Elation. Dont get me wrong the Carnival Elation is a nice ship but someone of this caliber on my ship , how could it be? The lights dimmed, I could hardly see. As I stepped forward to get a better look at our famous shipmate I fell down the stairs. I tumbled head over heals down several flights. Not one person turned or helped me up so enthralled were they to catch a glimpse of this celebrity. In the end Stevie?took his wig off so that it may be revealed that it was only a celebrity impersonator. Everyone groaned that they knew it all along and they were never fooled. The next day I looked like I had a run in with the UFC star Tito Ortiz.

The Mark Twain library is a bit of a misnomer. There doesnt seem to be a convenient way to get at any books so bring your own. It is beautiful and usually quiet.

Romeo and Juliet lounge is an elegantly styled room which was used for private parties some nights and for karaoke on others. Salsa dancing was a popular evening activity here.

The Cole Porter lounge has folk and country music playing and dancing. I only passed by here on my way to the ocean facing massaging chairs. Dukes is the piano bar named after the talented Duke Ellington. It is a jazz club with a striking entrance modelled on the Triumphal Arch from Washington Square park. This is an ideal place for photos around the white baby grand piano. We saw a wedding reception being held here. The Jekyll and Hyde disco is the place to party. Monitors show your fellow cruise mates dancing to the scintillating beat. The giant Jekyll and Hyde heads move to the music too-a bit creepy but cool after youve had a couple drinks.

The Carnival Elation is a gorgeous ship. Somewhat muted by Carnival standards. Its decor is of copper and inlaid woods. If you are hesitant to try Carnival Cruise Lines then this is the ship to try first. The service was second to none. The price of a Carnival cruise is always reasonable but by booking way in advance, about eight months we got an even better deal some would call it a cheap cruise. Dont be scared off by Carnivals old reputation for being a bunch of party ships. They are The Fun Ships after all. There is partying for sure if you want it but there are dozens of places to read or sit quietly on the Carnival Elation. Nothing is more peaceful than sitting on a chair atop the teak deck on the Carnival Elation looking out at the ocean passing slowly by. Whatever your concept of fun is they offer it. Believe them when they say Carnivals got the fun.

iPod capabilities of the 5th generation version plays .m4v and .mp4 MPEG-4 video file formats.

Microsoft Windows version of iTunes can transcode regular non copy-protected WMA files to an iPod supported format. WMA files with copy protection cannot be played in iTunes or be copied to an iPod.

What I do not like about the iPod is the inability to play some other formats, in particular the Ogg Vorbis and FLAC formats. MIDI files cannot be played on iPods as well, but can be converted into a compatible audio file format by choosing the "advanced" menu on iTunes.

Apple has designed the iPod to work with the iTunes media library software, which lets you manage your music libraries on your computer and on your iPod. iTunes can automatically synchronize your iPod with specific playlists or with the entire contents of a music library each time you connect your iPod to a host computer.

You can also set a rating (out of 5 stars) on any song, and can synchronize that information to an iTunes music library. iTunes lacks the ability to transfer songs from iPod to computer because of legality issues.

However, several third-party programs exist that provide music synchronization facilities similar to iTunes, but also offer the ability to copy music from iPod back to your host computer. Notable examples include vPod and the Ml iPod plugin for Winamp.

iTunes Music Store

The iTunes Music Store (iTMS) is an online music store run by Apple and accessed via iTunes. It was introduced on 28 April, 2003 and sells individual songs relatively easily and cheaply (e.g. 0.99 USD, 0.99 Euro, 0.79 GBP).

iPod's are the only portable music player that can play the purchased music, and this exclusiveness has

helped the store become the dominant online music service.

The purchased audio files use the AAC format with added encryption. The encryption is based on FairPlay Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Up to five authorized computers and an unlimited amount of iPods can play the files.

Burning the files onto an audio CD removes the Digital Rights Management (DRM), at a cost of reduced quality when re-compressed from one lossy format to another.

iPods cannot play music files encrypted with other rival Digital Rights Management (DRM) technologies,

such as Microsoft's protected WMA or RealNetworks' Helix-DRM.

Hardware

iPod capabilities was to connect it to a user's computer to update songs and recharge its battery solely through FireWire originally. It could also be charged by connecting it to a small power adapter which are shipped for free with several of the first generation iPods.

The now standard dock connector was not added until the 3rd generation in April 2003, allowing users

the option of using FireWire or USB to make data transfers, although the device could still not be charged by USB and the USB cable was not included.

Most PC's don't have FireWire ports so this move effectively opened the Windows market to iPod, although USB only Windows users had to keep their FireWire cables to plug into the wall adapter.

The dock connector also made it possible to transfer data, sound, and power back and forth to iPod accesories, which created an explosive market of devices that has been extremely profitable for third parties such as Belkin and Griffin. The resulting myriad of connecting devices is still one of iPod's greatest strengths over its competititors.

iPod capabilities of the 4th generation version could be charged with USB, and eventually Apple started shipping iPods with USB cables instead of one's with FireWire. Many Macs shipped before 2004 had only USB 1.1, which has a transfer speed of 11 Mbit/s, as opposed to FireWire's 400 and USB 2.0's 480.

Although none of these actually transfers at these exact rates, USB 1.1 is much slower than the other two, and for some USB 1.1 may simply be unusable for transferring music collections to fill a 40 GB iPod. Later introductions has continued to lessen iPod's reliance on FireWire.

iPod Shuffle, released in January 2005, plugs directly into a USB port, without a dock connector and has no Firewire support. The iPod Nano, released in September 2005, uses a dock connector that allows a FireWire cable to be plugged in to charge the device, but not to transfer data. With the 5th generation iPod, Apple dropped all support for data transfer over Firewire to any model iPod.

Like the Nano, the 5th generation iPod's dock connector will accept a FireWire cable and can draw power from it, but only the USB connection, not the one with FireWire, will support data transfer - a message stating this appears on the iPod screen.

This has drawn some criticism from the Mac community, since FireWire has been a standard feature on Apple Macs for many years, while USB 2.0 support was only added in October 2003.

The first three generations of iPod used two ARM 7TDMI-derived CPUs running at 90 MHz, while later models have variable speed chips which run at a peak of 80 MHz to save battery life.

The iPod use 1.8 inch (46 mm) ATA hard drives (with a proprietary connector) made by Toshiba and the iPod Mini uses one-inch Compact Flash microdrive hard drives made by Hitachi. It has a 32 MiB flash ROM chip which contains a bootloader, a program that tells the device to load the operating system from another medium (in this case, the hard drive).

All iPods, except for the 60 GB 5th generation version, has 32 MiB of RAM, a portion of which holds the OS loaded from the firmware and the vast majority of which serves to cache songs loaded from the hard drive.

For example, an iPod could spin the hard disk up once and copy about 30 MiB of upcoming songs on a playlist into RAM, thus saving power by not having the drive spin up for each song. (The 60 GB fifth-generation iPod holds 64 MiB of RAM, to further extend battery life.)

iPod was originally introduced with a black and white display but no current model uses one. iPod Photo (an addition to the functionality of the 4th generation iPod released in late 2004) introduced a color screen, while iPod shuffle (released January 2005) has no screen at all.

When iPod Mini was replaced with iPod Nano it received a colour screen (and photo capabilty) and starting with the 5th generation all full size iPods have color screens and photo capability.

And this fits very well in my case also. Recently I moved to an area where I couldn't get broadband internet connection. I talked to my sister and she said she knows someone who was using internet on a desktop computer using nothing but a GPRS enabled handset. I thought this sounds exciting, so why not give it a try. And guess what, I am publishing this post via my laptop which is connected to web through my GPRS enabled handset.

Now, you folks must be thinking how this works?

Here is what I did and you can do the same:

1. Get a GPRS enabled handset and get the internet connection activated on your handset.

2. Connect your mobile to your laptop using a data cable OR a bluetooth connection ( anything is fine. I am using a data cable, by the way)

3. Establish a dial up connection on your laptop/desktop computer. Now it will ask you to select a modem.Select the one which represents your handset modem. In my case, I have a SONY ERICCSON W580i handset, So I selected the same modem when I saw the options.

4. Once this is done, you can open the connection. Leave the username & Password fields blank. You need not put anything in these two fields.

5. Lastly, the dialup number- This proved challenging to me people! I was using the number *99# which didnt worked. I researched on internet and found another number *99***1# which also didnt worked for me. Lastly, I found one more number *99***2# and guess what- I was more than happy! !!I could see myself connected with internet using just my GPRS enabled mobile handset! !

Guys, believe me, it took me almost two days in this research, but it was worth it!
And guess how- Firstly I could get an internet connection, which seemed impossible initially and Secondly, Well I learned something new and which you will definitely find useful!

So people, follow these steps and remain connected with web while moving, or while in traffic. And dont forget to ask your mobile service provider about the rates of using internet!

Click on it to view and press to the right to go to the next song and to the left to go to the preceding song on the playlist. Most folks want that laptop for work, school, or college. Most laptops these days are Wi-Fi enabled. That means that they have the wireless hardware and software built into the computer. To the average consumer, wireless is a form of magic. You turn it on and it works, right? Not always. Understanding the basics to wireless will help avoid frustration and headaches.

First, before we get into the basics of wireless networking, I have a few opinions to express.

It seems that everybody wants to go wireless with their laptops and desktop PCs. Wireless for laptops makes sense, since they get moved around between work and home and points in between. You can always connect using the Wi-Fi network at work or steal bandwidth from someone else. There are hotspots all over. There are ethical questions involved with borrowing?your neighbors signal. Let your conscience be your guide.

Wireless for desktops is an open subject. Since most of us usually set our desktops up on our home or office workstations, they tend not to move around. The only benefit of having a wireless desktop is that you dont have the expense and trouble of running Ethernet cable around your house. If you are not a DYIer, an Ethernet cable installation is an extra outlay. If youre lucky, your present PC is only a few feet away from your Broadband Modem. I personally prefer to have all my stationary PCs hooked up with Cat 5 Ethernet cables. That way I dont load up the wireless bandwidth on the router. Well talk more on bandwidth later.

There are hardware requirements to wireless networking. These are the things you need to communicate.

At home you need:

(1) a Broadband internet connection (Cable or DSL modem),
(2) a router to broadcast the wireless signal,
(3) a wireless enabled computer.

You cannot set up a wireless network using a Dial-Up connection. Period. I recommend that you power off your Broadband Modem and any existing computer systems before you begin the installation of the wireless router. The computing equipment will start to negotiate with your router automatically on start up. This will get you on the network without confusion. The router and existing PCs should not need any further configuration. The default or current settings should work. Your PC should already be set to DHCP in your Network Connections TCP/IP properties window. If it werent you would not have been able to connect to your ISP. This is a default setting of your PC.

The Broadband internet connection gear should already be present. Thats the Cable or DSL Modem that your Internet Service Provider installed when you got their service. Its connected to the Cable or DSL filter connection coming from your wall. The Modem has two connectors as a rule. One for the Cable or DSL data into the Modem, and one RJ45 connector you probably have connected to the computer you have in service now.

Youll need to unplug the Ethernet cable between the computer and the Modem. Reconnect that cable to your wireless router. It goes into a RJ45 connector usually labeled WAN?for Wide Area Network. The only other connection you will need to make is to connect another Ethernet cable between from one of the wired ports on the back of the router to your PC. There are usually 4 of them. Any one will do to reconnect your existing PC so its on the network. The existing PC will get its internet connection through this port. Your routers default settings should allow you to start connecting to your Wi-Fi enabled computers.

If all the cables are correctly placed, you should now be able to get on the Internet from you existing computers and your wireless computers.

Some quick notes of interest:

(A) Your Wi-Fi router is transmitting and receiving in the 2.4MHZ range. So are your Wi-Fi enabled computers. This is the same frequency range of a number of cordless telephones. You may have interference on your cordless phones once the Wi-Fi network is installed. If this occurs youll need to get 5.8 MHZ phones or put up with the noise.
(B) One of the most common questions I get is ?strong>I bought a wireless laptop and I cant get on the internet. Why not??If your wireless router is installed properly, then your wireless laptop may need configuration. Go to your Network Places or Network Neighborhood for a wizard to help you set up your computer for wireless.
(C) Bandwidth is the volume of traffic you can sustain through your network. The more devices using the Wi-Fi network, the slower the network uploads/downloads will be.

Remember, your wireless network works a lot like your cordless phone system. You need a transmitter/receiver at each end. Think of the router as the base station and the wireless PC as the handset. You cant talk on your cordless phone if the base station is unplugged. So without a wireless router in service, you cant communicate with the Internet. Hotspots are just spillover signal from someones wireless router.

Broadband - Belfast Invests in Fibre Networks

Somewhat ahead of BT's broadband fibre network development plans for parts of Kent, Northern Ireland's government gave their go-ahead and support to implement a similar network in parts of Belfast recently.

The project was funded by The Department of Enterprise Trade and Investment (DETI) and will work as a kind of "trial", in that it will allow companies to gain a clearer picture of the cost, technical and practical issues of installing a fibre network.

The trial covers two networks, both of which involve around 180 new homes.

The first was installed by Virgin Media, and provides "fibre to the cabinet" to a series of street cabinets spanning the housing development. The connection from the cabinet to the home is then made along traditional copper cables.

The second, installed by Bytel Networks, is limited to just 10 homes, and provides a "fibre to the home" network. Within these homes a small unit was installed under the stairs that converts the fibre's optical signal into a digital one. Connections to the houses' telephone sockets where then made using copper wiring.

Both networks will be capable of providing residences with a broadband download speed of 20Mbps, at a reasonable cost.

This is because installing fibre networks into new houses does prove an economical investment; it's just the replacement of copper to fibre networks that proves costly. This is one of the factors that is causing Britain to lag behind in the race to super fast broadband

As mentioned, the two networks will prove as a trial, allowing companies to asses which network proves more successful, thus allowing for better future growth.

Loudspeakers are blaring Calypso tunes and before you know it happy feet take over as conga lines are formed with young and old alike swaying to the rhythm on the brightly lit center stage.

The atmosphere is straight out of a Graham Greene novel: sunburned, bead wearing, flip-flopped tourists mix effortlessly with the ever-smiling local crowd, all in search of a good night on the town. The family friendly, clean and modern facilities are a welcome transformation from the Oistins of old. While some may favor nostalgia over change, Oistins was in danger of losing the plot several years ago when a less than attractive young local crowd fostered a menacing vibe with their foul language, ear drum splitting cacophony of incompatible music and, at times, lewd behavior. But those days are now fading unpleasant memories as a sea of laughter and wholesome food and drink now greets the never-ending stream of tourists arriving by H car and taxis. A brigade of uniformed Barbados policeman stand crisp and regally nearby should trouble even think of rearing its head. Young children dance with proud mums and dads, everyone fitting into place at the Oistins Fish Fry where the only rules are the ones Golden and to have a good time.

While Oistins is open 7 days a week, Friday night is the traditional festive party atmosphere associated with Oistins. Some shops, such as Lexie's, are open during the day. Food at night is available from approximately 6 pm onward. Prices vary, but generally expect to pay Bds $15.00 to $20.00 per plate of food (US$ 7.50 to $10.00). A real bargain by Barbados standards. Take the time to walk around and enjoy the hand crafted necklaces, shells, hand made shoes from the Rastas, and a bargainer's delight of interesting local art. The vendors all proclaim that they offer the BEST fish or chicken and their touts will attempt to direct you to sample that particular hut. But don't feel pressured as most offerings are of a consistent quality and similar menu. One caveat: if so inclined, ask whether the rum punch is "proper rum punch" or homemade versus a store bought mix. You'll be viewed as a local who knows a thing or two about their rum punch!

This week for the first time Apple lowered the prices of the old versions of the IPOD touch and Iphone. This was due to the newer versions being released a couple of months back and it made the fans happy. A lot of fans had complained that the pricing should go down as early as the new models of the version were released and Apple made this happen. Apple obviously care about there fans a lot and as a major Ipod fan and user I was happy when I was informed that they had lowered the prices.

I am also curious to see whether Apple release a very cheap product in the near future, so it is more affordable for those living in both Asia and Africa. Some thing a lot cheaper than even the Ipod Shuffle. Such a cheap product would cement there position as the global market leader for personal technology.

I am very impressed with the quality of the Iphone so far. Even though I had to save up for a while just to buy it, it has been worth it. I am more organised as the phone has a lot of these fantastic features. My voice and video conversations is now a lot clearer due to the high quality of the phone. And I am allowed to share software and cool games with my friends who also have an Iphone them selves. I am really looking forward to the newer version of the Iphone which is expected to be out next year. As a newer version was released only a couple of months ago, that is the one I have.

With an ever increasing amount of broadband connections available, more children than ever have access to the internet. Are enough precautions being taken to ensure their safety?

Research has revealed that children as young as three are spending on average two and a half hours per week surfing the internet outside of school hours. Worryingly, what the research has also highlighted is that almost half of parents are failing to sufficiently monitor the websites that their children view.

A study conducted by the price comparison site, Moneysupermarket.com, reveals that as the children get older, the amount of time spent online increases. Children aged from seven to nine spend, on average, one and three quarter hours per week online outside school, compared to four and a quarter hours spent online by those aged between 13 and 15.

As a child gets older, it becomes progressively more difficult for a parent to know what that child is doing every minute of the day. When they reach their early teenage years, they begin to break away and demand more independence and privacy; this can make it especially difficult for parents to adequately check what they are getting up to online.

Children who are approaching teenage years are probably more computer literate than their parents realise. Despite this, their social naivet can leave them susceptible to manipulation from undesirable characters of all kinds.

It's no exaggeration to say that the internet is possibly the most powerful educational tool that you are ever likely to possess in your home. If your child is taught to use it in an appropriate manner then it can be hugely beneficial to their education. Taking into consideration the rapid rate of change in computer and related technologies today, what is in store for us in the future? Several new computer designs are currently being researched by leading PC manufacturers. Some of these designs have yielded promising test results, and possibly will lead to new types of computer architecture some of which are listed below.

Quantum Computing Model:

It is based on reading the alignments of individual atoms in a magnetic field. They aren't limited by the binary nature of the classical physical world of bits, however they depend on observing the state an atom or quantum bits that might represent a one or a zero, for reasons that atoms change energy states very quickly, much quickly than even the fastest computer processors.
Molecular Computing Model:

On this architecture researchers are trying to create tiny circuits out of single molecules instead of the current transistors we are using. Its effect will reduce the size of a computer processor to the size of a molecule.
DNA Computing Model:

The DNA model is based on reading the condition of a DNA molecule as either open?or closed?

All the models potentially reduce the size of the basic processor to the nanometer (billionth of a meter) range, thereby providing for power computing, complex problem solving and computers to be smaller than the size of a living cell. Hewlett Packard (HP) has won the Nano-chip Patent.

The latest and the greatest processor I currently find in the computer world is the new Intel Core 2 Quad Processor. I find it to be the most powerful processor available in the market right now.

VPN Over Satellite

Satellite Internet services offer high speed Internet connections to offices and homes across the US. The connections are fast and comparable to broadband, DSL and cable modem. The transponders used for transmitting the signals are placed at a distance of 22,300 miles above the equator. The time required for a signal to cover the two-way distance is approximately 480 milliseconds and it is known as latency time. There is another latency time between the network operations center and the World Wide Web. These two time factors add to a total latency time of around 600 milliseconds from the time the signal emits from the dish to the time it is received back at the dish. This is known as the ping time. The ping time causes delay hence, Satellite Internet is not considered suitable for many real-time applications. We shall see some of the drawbacks that are caused by ping time delays.

As a home user if you want to play online games Satellite Internet may not be the ideal option. Setting-up virtual private networks (VPN) through Satellite Internet is not a viable proposition. There are many new technologies being developed to overcome the delay in ping times. One such technology is RELIA technology which has pending US patents. This technology overcomes long ping times and packet loss, improving the performance and reliability of Satellite Internet services. The technology has been developed by Niwot Networks. Apart from ping time delays there are factors such as packet loss which hamper the quality of Satellite Internet communication. RELIA helps in reducing ping time and packet delays that happen if data and voice packets are transmitted over naked TCP.

There is reason for Satellite Internet users to be glad. The tests carried out with this new technology prove that RELIA will definitely help Satellite Internet providers in reducing ping time. In one particular test carried out with 10 files of 1 Mb, losing 8 packets out of 200 with 600 milliseconds ping time, the naked TCP connections failed 72 out of 133 trials before all the files were transferred which is 63%. When RELIA technology was used the failure time was only 7%. It would not be surprising to see that leading Satellite Internet providers such as HughesNet using this technology over naked TCP to reduce ping times.

Satellite Internet subscribers have to wait for faster browsing experience until technologies are stabilized. There are companies which make gateways for Satellite Internet providers to handle packet delay and loss. Satellite Internet providers are weighing different options to offer better browsing experience to subscribers. HughesNet, one of the leading service providers has 325,000 connections presently across the United States and serves 99% of all US zip codes. The numbers prove that Satellite Internet is slowly catching up and it would not be long before it captures more market share from other service providers offering DSL, broadband and cable modem connectivity.

Peer to Peer (P2P) Technology- How it works:

Ever wondered how P2P works? This guide will run down most of the major P2P services and how they work. Peer to Peer technology lets people share files over a network on the internet. Most people now use what is known as the second generation of P2P, which is unlike its predecessors like such as Napter, the second generation has no centralized server, making it harder for it to shut down.

How first generation P2P services worked:

A connection is established by a peer finding another peer to connect to. Each peer exchanges active peer and their addresses. When a connection has been established, the user can then search for files. When a search has been submitted, it connects to all nodes on its connection list. The results are then displayed and a connection is made.

How second generation P2P services worked:

Gnutella2: Hubs are used to quickly search for files, eliminating the original "find peer and search" method. Instead, they store a list of files on all the "Leaves" (A peer) that are connected to it, thus dramatically reducing search time. Advantages: Unlike Napster, if a hub crashes, it's network stays alive. Disadvantages: Doesn't make network any more durable than the first generation of P2P. Gnutella2: www.gnutella.com

FastTrack: Programs such as Kazaa and iMesh use the FastTrack protocol. Normal peers connect to a supernode which acts jsut like a hub. Supernodes also connect to other supernodes, allowing search requests to move through the network very quickly. Peers then establish a direct connection to a client after a file has been found. Advantages: Any client can become a supernode. Disadvantages: Corruption of files occur. Clients include: Kazaa (www.kazaa.com), iMesh (www.imesh.com)

BitTorrent: .torrent files are used to store information about the file being shared. Once a torrent file is opened, the client connects to the tracker which tells the client where the file is located and what other peers/seeders there are. BitTorrent works by chunks of small files being transferred (even through multiple connections), while you are downloading. The files are checked for corruption as the download continues. Leechers are people who download and don't upload, and are highly frowned upon on some sites, disallowing them from downloading any further. Advantages: Very fast for popular, new files. Disadvantages: Trackers are unreliable and if it goes down, the file is lost. Clients include: Azureus (www.azureus.com), Shareaza (www.shareaza.com).

EDonkey Network: Edonkey runs on the same principle as first generation P2P, only anybody can become a server. Clients communicate with the server to download files, and random chunks can be downloaded in any order then put together in the end. Advantages: No file corruption, leech penalization. Indian Mobile Infrastructure - To 3G or Not To 3G

To most overseas investors circa 1994, a first look at the Indian Telecommunication Policy appeared to mitigate concerns. In our naivet, we expected this Policy to put India at least on par with China where a stifling regime governed telecommunications. A disastrous implementation however ensured India languished behind its neighbor on tele-density, cellular usage and broadband coverage.

Fortunately, later developments like the Unified Licensing Scheme, albeit a reactionary response to events threatening to overwhelm TRAI (the Regulator), do pull Indian de-regulation ahead of even places like Hong Kong where a unified scenario is only just being discussed. Merits of particular aspects of de-regulation notwithstanding, the overseas investor expects to see a clear roadmap forward if the increase in permissible FDI to 74% has to hold any meaning. The recent imbroglio on the future of the 1900MHz band is an excellent opportunity for TRAI to use the controversy to draw up precisely such a map.

Of equal concern to the foreign investor and something on which operators on both sides of the GSM-CDMA divide concur, is the demise of high margin demand. The future holds a long slog uphill for every rupee increase to the ARPU (Average Revenue per User). Making it more interesting is the futility of erstwhile successful product and marketing strategies under todays margin conditions. Additionally when one last looked, the government had its hand in the till for an unbelievable 22-25% of revenues in the form of license fees, revenue share and a second license fee through a disingenuous spectrum usage charge? Add the Access Deficit Charge (ADC) ransom being paid out to the Dominant carrier BSNL and one cannot blame some investors for setting aside their calculators and heading for the door.

With cellular collection rates at abysmal levels thanks to the pseudo-WLL/CDMA roll outs, the cellular operators look at additional infrastructure investments with trepidation. However, innovative value-added services being one of the few ways to elevate ARPUs out of their funk, invest they must. How intelligently they do so, decides their fate.

The 2003-04 EDGE (Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution) deployment by some GSM operators is the sort of response one hoped to see. Cost effectively providing three times the data capacity of GPRS, EDGE gives operators like Bharti, Hutch and IDEA the delivery system to offer innovative information and entertainment based services, as well as economically venture into rural areas. Using the same TDMA (Time Division Multiple Access) frame structure as GSM, EDGE allows existing cell plans to remain intact. On the other hand it uses a new modulation scheme that is also used for UMTS/3G. This makes it a sort of half-way house to 3G, for those still brave enough to contemplate that option. However while EDGE was a smart decision, the jury is still out on 3G.

Emulating European cellular operators whose track record belies such faith, some Indian cellular carriers have nevertheless started chalking out transition paths towards that Holy Grail. Even if the collection rates in India were not as dismal as they are, deploying 3G could be a disaster waiting to happen. It was heartening therefore when the Indian IT Minister stated last year that India aims to leapfrog to fourth-generation wireless technology, skipping 3G as it has not been found cost-effective. This is one of the rare occasions when the industry is well served by listening to its Minister.

However these are mere words until the Honorable Minister first unfetters VOIP (Voice-over-IP). Unless the chastity belt around VOIP networks is discarded and they are allowed to mingle with the PSTN, India is going to tie itself into knots over 4G, inside which by the way, the pervasive theme is IP. Living outside India one usually lags behind unfolding events, but to the best of my knowledge even today the VOIP ?PSTN interconnect incredibly, remain illegal.

One beneficial outcome to the 1996 fiasco surrounding the bids for regional circles has been an all around reluctance to consider further auctions, including for 3G. This saved Indian operators from the fate of their European counterparts. While Europes 3G license fees did nothing to secure a future for the technology, emerging OFDMA (WiFi/ WiMax MMDS) alternatives may very well deliver the coup de grace. Whatever the counter-arguments out there, the fact that 3G services in The UK still resort to distress sales of basic voice services to garner a customer base, says it all.

Unlike EDGE, going 3G does not just involve software upgrades and the math becomes more daunting by orders of magnitude. For starters, the air-interface/ frame structure (WCDMA as against TDMA) is totally different. This means changes at every cell-site in the network. And then of course there is the entire wherewithal required to inter-operate with existing 2G elements of the network.

An alternative however does exist, that until recently dare not speak its name for fear of the Telecommunication establishment.

Contrary to negative press stemming largely from the large cellular operators, its possible to co-opt Wireless LANs (WLANs) into one eco-system with cellular networks. An EDGE-enabled cellular network patched into WLAN (WiFi/WiMax) networks in high density locations could allow Indian operators to deliver high-speed data services with laser precision exactly where required and at far less costs than in 3G-ing a similar area. I trust this is akin to what the IT Minister has in mind. Additionally, such meshed network could provide indoor voice connectivity over cell phones in broadband-enabled locations with poor cellular reception.

An interesting twist comes from the recent furtive WiMax deployment in Japan by Vodafone and elsewhere by other marquee 3G operators, vidicating the position taken in this paper.

The cellular operator may have to offer different fixed line/broadband type tariff structures in these locations, raising fears that they would eat into cellular revenues, But one has to wonder how much of the generated traffic would represent cannibalized revenue and how much would bring in incremental dollars from traffic presently going any way over fixed/wireless broadband and over the different flavors of Voice over Broadband (VoB) services used increasingly from precisely such locations.

No one touts OFDMA air-interfaces as an alternative to WCDMA /3G. Its the integration of the two technologies that creates a potentially winning alternative, especially in the Indian context. Integrating selected WLAN Hot spots into a cellular network requires an IP Network Controller (INC), an IP access network, a patch to allow the WLAN access network to issue the relevant accounting information to the cellular AAA (authentication, authorization, and accounting) server and an investment in IP roaming. Barring a few more widgets, thats essentially it.

Given the relative simplicity of this solution, anyone who has seen engineers sweat over cell site deployment in congested locations has to wonder why the operators have not already adopted WLAN to augment cellular coverage on the cheap.

Costs aside, there is an interesting aspect of 3G technology that could force operators to consider OFDMA based options to augment cellular data delivery systems. It may not be common knowledge, but 3G differs from 2G (GSM) in one important aspect ?the interdependence of network quality. In 2G, high traffic in one location tends to introduce poor quality in just the particular cell covering that location. In 3G however, the bad quality also impacts surrounding cells because a cell size may vary depending on the traffic load it carries. Called cell-breathing?this is due to the interdependence between capacity and coverage over WCDMA air-interfaces and could end up impacting voice quality.

No service provider however, is going to jeopardize voice quality and capacity for the sake of data. This implies there are merits to a separate data-centric network. And if such options are available at least at the peripheries, at costs substantially lower than the vaunted 3G and if these options appear slated to become the bulwark of future 4G data delivery mechanisms, it then surely behooves the Indian cellular operator not to adopt the same blinkered thinking thats the hallmark of his European counterpart and to look seriously at a GSM/EDGE-WLAN based solution.

It baffles why instead of prevaricating, the European and American cellular companies havent swooped in and massively sequestered wireless access for IP traffic from the fragmented but potentially formidable WLAN and Voice over Broadband (VoB) players. After all, at least for now the cellular operator holds all the cards. Only he gets to decide whether the customer receives a combined cellular + WLAN bill. This gives his combined cellular-WLAN service a killer advantage over any other Fixed/wireless broadband or Vonage-type VoB offering. By now the cellular operators could have usurped great chunks of IP traffic and decimated the upstart VoB players before they ever took root. Alternatively, just a declaration of intent could have the WLAN & VoB players scurrying to negotiate interconnect and revenue share agreements on terms that could only be favorable to the cellular operator.

Its too obvious a scenario and one doesnt expect such shortsightedness to last. T-Mobiles extensive WiFi deployment in the USA and in Europe is apparently with such an end-game in mind. And so was, we hope, the honorable IT Ministers intention, when he squared off against 3G.
